Good morning:

Many of us are very good at making a big deal out of very small things. Has the question of who tracked in dirt on the kitchen floor ever escalated into a major argument? Could one rude customer service rep ruin your entire day? Have you berated yourself for a week over a forgotten appointment? At the time, these things can seem overwhelmingly important. Yet in the big picture, they don’t really matter. They’re just momentary blips on the radar of our lives. They don’t have lasting importance or impact.

How big is the big picture? For the unbelieving world, it’s only as big as this earthly life. The question becomes, “Does this matter to my time on earth?” The Lord, however, has given us a much broader picture. By faith we are joined to Jesus and His life, death, and resurrection. The big picture for us is a view encompassing far more than this world. The question then is, “What matters for my eternal future?”

Keeping the big picture in mind gives us a healthy, optimistic perspective. Daily we hear of terrible tragedies and deadly disasters around the world. Sickness and other troubles are often part of our lives as well. It all seems so hopeless and permanent. But that’s just the short-term. Step back and look at the big picture. Because God’s Son has taken away our sins and reconciled us to God, we know “that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Rom. 8:18). Let’s make a big deal out of that!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor
