Good morning,
Is God unreasonable? One dictionary definition of the term is: “Not in accordance with practical realities.” If human beings are the judge of practical realities, then yes, God is unreasonable. We can’t wrap our minds around the truth that God is one God yet three Persons. To create something out of nothing stretches human thought into “unreasonable” territory. To think that God can solve any problem whatsoever is beyond “practical reality” from an earthly viewpoint. When the apostle Paul spoke about the resurrection from the dead, the people of Athens thought it was ridiculous.
God is unreasonable, and that is a very good thing! If we could understand and explain everything about Him, He would be no greater than we are. If He were not able to do anything more than we could conceive, He would be no different than any number of false gods people have worshiped throughout history.
God is far beyond human intellect. “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?…For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever!” (Rom. 11:33-34,36).
We don’t have to wonder who God is or decide what He is able to do. We don’t have to understand all His ways. We don’t have to rationalize His plans. In His Word He reveals Himself and shows what He has done for our eternal salvation. “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived—the things God has prepared for those who love him—these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit” (1 Cor. 2:9-10).
The Spirit works faith to trust what is impossible to grasp with our human minds. Who could ever imagine or make sense out of God sacrificing His own Son for unworthy, ungrateful sinners? Nothing is more “unreasonable.” Yet nothing is more wonderful. Nothing else saves. Praise His name!
