Good morning:
“No thanks, I think I’ll stay home and watch TV.” Have you ever said that? “Fly down to Florida with us and enjoy the amazing weather.” “No thanks, it can’t be better than Wisconsin.” “Come over for dinner.” “No thanks, I’m happy with my peanut butter and jelly.” How many times do we miss out on new blessings simply because we are comfortable where we are and can’t imagine anything better?
God fills our days with blessings. This weekend is no exception. Some will head out of town for hunting. Some will tackle a list of chores. Others of us may enjoy downtime with family or friends. Thank God for all these things. But let’s not miss out on the greater things to come. The psalmist writes: “You hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory” (Ps. 73:23-24).
God has an amazing, awesome home in store for us. “You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand” (Ps. 16:11). Jesus made it all possible by reconciling us to God through His suffering and death on the cross. He ascended into heaven to prepare a place for us. He will come again to take us there. “Our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Rom. 8:18).
But how often did you think about your heavenly home this past week? When we have the opportunity to turn to Scripture and read more about it, do we say, “No thanks, I’ll watch TV instead?” If we’re honest with ourselves, do we have to admit that we are far more excited about the activities, experiences, and pleasures of this temporary world than we are about the joys of heaven?
As wonderful as our earthly blessings are, they can’t begin to measure up to what God has in store for all those who love Him. Thank the Lord for the gifts of today, but also praise Him for what lies just beyond…the new heavens and earth, the home of righteousness.
In Christ,
Pastor
