Good morning,

The photo app on my phone regularly sends me pictures from the past, maybe family gatherings from a year ago or a vacation trip in 2015. It’s fun to remember those days and experiences. It also is a poignant reminder of how things change. Children grow up to have families of their own. Hikes which were effortless ten years ago are now less realistic. We all change over time. That is why Solomon urges, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth….Remember him—before the silver cord is severed” (Eccl. 12:1, 6).

Changelessness sets God apart from us human beings. The Father who made all things simply by saying the word is still the God whose providence sustains all life to this very moment. “The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing” (Ps. 145:15-16). The Son of God who became our brother to live and die as our Savior from sin is still the same. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Heb. 13:7). The Holy Spirit who came to dwell within us at our baptism hasn’t changed His mind about His work of preserving us in the one true faith. “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Phil. 1:6).

The more things change, the more we can count on God and His Word never changing. Where will we put our trust? “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Lk. 21:33). By faith in the unchanging God and His grace, we don’t have to fear the changes in life. Let us instead meet them with the confidence that “nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:39).

Yours in Jesus’ name,

Pastor
