Good morning: Is your wall calendar scribbled full of reminders about upcoming appointments, places you need to be, and things you need to do? Maybe your refrigerator is the family bulletin board which you use to communicate and coordinate with one another. Do you have a phone app to schedule your day down to the minute? Life is complicated. There is so much going on. You have to calculate how long it will take to get to work and how to squeeze in shopping and ball games later. There are bills to pay at a particular time each month or you’ll be faced with late charges. Unforeseen “emergencies” crop up at the worst possible moment. Decisions need to be made throughout the day about what to do first and what to put off until later. Even if your personal time commitments are a little less hectic, world events have a way of spilling over into our lives. A terrorist attack on the other side of the world causes gas prices to jump 50 cents a gallon overnight. Life is complicated! Life is complicated—from our earthly viewpoint. But Jesus “uncomplicates” it and says, “Do not worry about your life...But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well (Matt. 6:25, 33). Go after God’s kingdom, and all the details of life will fall into place too. We know the passage, but how does it work? God’s kingdom is his rule in our hearts. By faith we trust that Jesus has paid for our sins and made peace with God for us. We are his children and heirs of heaven. Knowing that our eternal future is secure, we can be sure that the Lord will not only take care of all the lesser things we can see, but even the needs we’re not aware of yet. He still wants us to plan, work, and organize according to the abilities he provides. But it’s not complicated. By his grace we know what is most important, his kingdom. We know whom we can rely on no matter what, our risen and returning Savior. Let’s seek his kingdom. Let’s make it a priority today to set aside time to read and hear his gospel Word, to bring him praise and requests in prayer, and to look forward to meeting in his house tomorrow.
