Good morning,
Do you check expiration dates on jars in the fridge before you put them on the table, always wear a seatbelt in the car, watch your diet and faithfully take your medication strictly according to the doctor’s orders? Do you change batteries in the smoke detectors twice a year, lock your doors at night, and wear a cap and gloves in the winter? These are all good precautions to take for health and wellbeing, but will they make your life disaster-proof?
What if you did more? What if you stayed out of the sun or avoided going anywhere altogether? You might not be involved in a car accident, but your life still would not be disaster-proof. You couldn’t anticipate every eventuality and even if you could, you would not be able to control events. A disasterproof life is impossible unless… “If you make the Most High your dwelling—even the LORD, who is my refuge—then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent” (Ps. 91:9).
By ourselves we are guilty, vulnerable sinners, defenseless against the troubles and death sin has brought into the world. But when we look to the Lord and trust Him, we couldn’t be safer. He is the perfect refuge. Our lives then are disaster-proof. Sin’s condemnation can’t touch us because Jesus took all our guilt and punishment upon Himself. Enemies are no match for the ever-present protection of God’s holy angels. Sickness and other trials are only temporary. Sooner or later they have to release their grip. “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 38-39).
With a disaster-proof life in Christ, we don’t have to be tentative and fearful. We can meet each new day with confidence certain that whatever lies ahead, the Lord will be there to turn even the hard things into blessings. He will be there to supply His strength to more than compensate for our weakness. His saving work in Christ has already won the greatest victory. He is not going to abandon us now. Jesus promises, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (Jn. 8:12). May the Lord of light bless our walk today!
