Good morning everyone,
“You can be and do whatever you set your mind to!” How often have you heard that? Do you believe it? When we’re young it’s exciting to imagine it. Did you ever dream of being an eagle perched on the top of a towering redwood surveying the world at your feet, or picture yourself as the star pitcher for your favorite baseball team?
But then reality sets in and we learn that there are many things totally out of reach. Even modest goals may be impossible. Runners World magazine informed me that at my age I will never again achieve a personal best time.
Far more devastating is the reality of our spiritual inabilities. God says, “Be holy , because I am holy” (Lev. 11:44). No matter how determined we are and how intently we set our mind on achieving that righteousness, we fall short. We always will. Everyone will.
But there is One for whom nothing is impossible. When the angel told Mary that she would be the mother of Jesus, she asked how it would come about. Gabriel explained that the Baby would be conceived in Mary’s womb by the power of the Holy Spirit. “For nothing is impossible with God!” (Lk. 1:37).
What a confidence builder for life! Sure, there are many things impossible for us. We have countless needs, foremost being the need for forgiveness and peace with God. But nothing is impossible for the Lord who loves us, became one of us, and laid down His life for us that we might be children of God and live forever. As Paul says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom. 8:31).
The sermon text for tomorrow (Jn. 6:1-15) is the familiar account of Jesus miraculously feeding the 5,000. It underscores the Lord’s grace and power to help even in the most “impossible” of circumstances.
The Lord’s Supper will be celebrated in both services (8:00 and 9:30).
