Good morning everyone,
The headlines are eye-grabbing: “Invest here and never worry about money again.” “Lose 20 pounds in 20 days with one simple food.” “Try the drug-free cure for back pain.” How awesome! Who wouldn’t want these things? Yet most of us hear the claims with a heavy dose of skepticism. Talk is cheap. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
So what about the claims Jesus makes? They far surpass anything else. “I and the Father are one” (Jn. 10:30). “No one comes to the Father but by Me” (Jn. 14:6). “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (Jn. 8:12). And what about this one: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies”? (Jn. 11:25).
It’s understandable that people would be skeptical. When Philip told Nathanael that Jesus was the Messiah, the One promised by God in the Old Testament, Nathanael replied, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip didn’t try to overcome his friend’s skepticism with persuasive logic or an impassioned speech, he simply said, “Come and see.”
Do you ever have doubts? As you go through very “ordinary” days and weeks, do you wonder about the “extraordinary” promises Jesus makes? When you struggle with problems which you see are all too real, do you wonder about the unseen things the Lord speaks of? There is no better advice than to “Come and see.” Come to Jesus in His Word. Let Him tell you Himself who He is and what He has done. Let Him reassure you that His Word is truth and that He cannot lie, for He is the holy God. Come and see His miracles which back up His claims about His power over all things. Come and see His cross on which He suffered all we deserved by our sins. Come and see Him as the One who is greater than any enemy or problem you are facing today. Trust Him as the One who is the same loving Lord yesterday, today, and forever. Come to Him with the highest expectations. You won’t be disappointed. His Word is never too good to be true.
